A Red Packet or "Hong Bao" in Chinese or in modern days, any bright auspicious colored packet such as gold or yellow is simply an envelope with money or jewelries in it and given during special Chinese special occasions such as Chinese New Year, weddings and birthdays as gift, wishing them good prosperity luck, happy marriage or longevity, depending on the occasion. It can also be gifted to someone going far away for holiday, work or study to wish them safe journey.
