A beautiful hanging featuring the colorful Om Mani Padme Hum Mantra spinning lotus petals adorned with a double dorje.
“Om Mani PadMe Hum” (derived from Sanskrit) is the most widely-known and popular mantra used in Buddhism. This six syllable phrase which can be transliterated to "Hail the Jewel in the Lotus" is an invocation mantra of the Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Infinite Compassion who protects one from harm. The Bodhisattva vowed to free all sentient beings from suffering and is said to appear anywhere to help all beings in danger and distress. Om Mani PadMe Hum is also referred to as "The Mantra of Universal Protection" or the "Six Character Great Bright Mantra".
If one were to uphold the recitation of this mantra, regardless of one's whereabouts, one will be protected by all the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, as well as gods, dragon and others of the eightfold division. It is able to cut off one's ignorance and open up one's wisdom; subdue demons and heal illnesses; dispel calamities and lengthens life; bestows immeasurable blessings and wisdom, and gain profound tranquility. It can save and alleviate hundreds and thousands of suffering and difficulty.
In Buddhism the Dorje is the symbol of Vajrayana, one of the three major branches of Buddhism. The dorje is a Tibetan word and also called Vajra in sanskrit, which means diamond or thunderbolt. This is because it symbolizes a tool, as hard as the diamond or as powerful as the thunderbolt, that can cut through ignorance, delusion, greed, anger and impurities of the mind. It is also believed to represent firmness of spirit and spiritual power.
