White Tara, sometimes called ‘Mother of All Buddhas” is probably one of the most popular Tara, believed to be manifestation of the tears of compassion of the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. Her compassion for the human beings is said to be stronger than a mother’s love for her children. In Tibet, Tara is known as “Buddhist savior-goddess” or “goddess of compassion” who labors to relieve human from suffering. She is able to see all the sufferings and cries for help of living beings with her seven eyes that symbolize her unending compassionate awareness – there are the two usual eyes, a third eye on her forehead, two on her palms and two on the soles of her feet.

She is also a deity of long life associated with health, longevity and healing. Her healing energy is very intense and profound – she is therefore often invoked to counteract sickness, prolong life and bring good health with the mantra “Om Tare Tuttare Ture Svaha”. In Tibet, Her mantra is the second most common mantra after “Om Mani Padme Hum’ – the mantra of Chenrezig.

She is often depicted with an elaborate head ornament, seated cross-legged on a lotus (padma) and holding a lotus flower, representing calm, grace and serenity.
