Mathematicians view numbers as the universal language. But numerologists believe the numbers in your life can determine who you are and what you can do.
Numbers are at the center of our lives, giving meaning to the birth charts, astrology life maps, and flying star charts at the heart of our personal feng shui. They are the components within these charts that provide clues to how the cosmic vibrations in our living environments interact with our inner vibrations. Numbers- and the way they combine with each other – reveal influences that have a direct impact on the kind of people we eventually become.
Numerology is the practice of reading and acting on the meanings of numbers as well as their sums and combinations. The sum of the numbers associated with our birthdate (Birth Number, also known as Life Path Number), for instance, tells us a great deal about our aptitudes and character tendencies. It is an excellent gauge to your strengths and weaknesses, acting as an introduction to your personality, your outward perception and attitude as well as the influences that find resonance with your character.
Similarly, your Name numbers (also known as Expression Numbers) - also offers clues to your personality. Using numbers in this way also reveals the direction of your life destiny and the nature of its peaks and troughs, addressing your luck more intensely than your personality.
When you study the meanings associated with your Birth and Name numbers, you will get a very good feel about your character tendencies, how you respond to others and to the events in your life. Your birth and name numbers – made by converting your date of birth and then the letters of your name into single numbers (1 to 9) – are the keystones of your personal number feng shui. However, there are two additional numbers that resonate with some special force: 11 and 22.
When you are an 11 or 22 person, or when you are married to one or are exceptionally close to one, you will find they exert powerful influence. For those of you who get final Birth Numbers of 11 or 22, these are special numbers that need not be reduced but can stand alone as Master Numbers. You will see examples to illustrate this later.
The chance of positive opportunities opening pathways for the fulfillment of your potential becomes stronger if the same number (Birth, Name, etc.) gets repeated within the vicinity and life of you either as house addresses, a necklace or bracelet with numbers, car numbers, or telephone numbers etc.
Without further ado, here are ways to find the most important numbers that give insight about your life:
1) HOW TO FIND YOUR BIRTH NUMBER (LIFE PATH NUMBER)
Learning the significance of your Birth Number is believed to be the most significant of the main numbers in numerology. It reveals the potential in your life – the path you should follow and aspects that affect it. Your birth number suggests what will bring you the greatest potential for success, satisfaction, fulfillment and happiness. Knowing your birth number is the beginning of a journey into understanding your true nature.
Let’s use, as an example, a birth date of April 17, 1983:
Basically, each number in your birthdates is added together until it’s reduced to a single digit. Some numbers require multiple reductions to achieve this. Keep repeating the calculation until you reach a single digit or a number called a Master Number (read on). The above birth date would be reduced as such:
Month: 4
Day: 17 = 1+7 = 8
Year: 1983 = 1+9+8+3 = 21 = 2+1 = 3
NOTE that the dates aren’t added all at one time, such as 4+1+7+1+9+8+3. Each category (month, day, and year) is reduced on its own first. Then, add the three digits: 4+8+3 = 15 = 1+5 = 6.
In this case, the Birth Number is 6.
Master Numbers
As mentioned earlier, the numbers 11 and 22 are referred to as Master Numbers, considered to be very powerful. In numerology calculations, they are still reduced, but when calculating Birth or Name numbers, they are not. So, referring to the previous birthdates example, if it were perhaps November 17, 1983 instead of April 17, 1983, it would be reduced as: 11+8+3 = 22 and NOT 2+8+3 = 13 = 1+3 = 4. Since we end with a Master Number 22 there is no need to reduce further, resulting in a Birth number of 22.
2) HOW TO FIND YOUR NAME NUMBER (EXPRESSION NUMBER)
Name numbers are also called Expression numbers or Destiny numbers, and they provide the key to discovering talents and also your shortcomings that you brought with you at birth. While the Birth numbers disclose which road you walk on, the Expression numbers tell the flair and character you use in doing so. Those believing in reincarnation say the Birth Number shows what lesson you need to learn in this lifetime, while the Name number shows your personality traits you carried over into this life.
Just as we do with Birth numbers, we determine Name numbers by reducing the number values, only this time, we use our name as a guideline. Each letter is assigned a number.

For example, the name Abe Norman Marley:

****Marley: 4+1+9+3+5+7 = 29 = 2+9 = 11 (no need to reduce further as 11 is a Master Number)
Finally, add the end result numbers together and you get 22 (8+3+11 = 22). Your Name number is 22. Since we end with a Master Number there is no need to reduce.

Indeed the Birth number reacts to other numbers and these create a more subtle view of the self. Thus, while basic traits may be the same, how the Birth Number eventually affects a person’s life depends upon other numbers as well. For instance, two people may tend to be volatile and quick tempered, yet this same volatility of temperament could bring great good fortune to one and abject misfortune to the other.
Thus reading Birth Number indications should merely be the starting point to understanding the essence of you. For the numbers to work for you, it is a good idea to look further for embedded combinations.
Identifying Combinations of Numbers Embedded in your Date of Birth that Bring Hidden Good Fortune
The Birth Number is one of the numerical destiny indicators that reveal our tendencies and affinities. But note that these affinities are heavily influenced by other numbers embedded inside the birth date, which create combinations of numbers that give additional clues about our luck.
There are combinations of numbers embedded in your date of birth that bring hidden good fortune. You just need to learn how to detect them, and to activate those combinations that work strongly in your favor. In many instances, looking at number combinations offers a more detailed numerology reading that looking at the Birth Number or Name Number alone.
The presence of the “Specials” in your birth date are stand-alone indications of good-fortune potential. Whether or not they get activated and manifest as real good fortune depends on how you respond to the opportunities and people who come your way and enter your life.
When the same Birth number and “Specials” are repeated in the life of a person, for instance as address number, telephone numbers, bank account numbers, worn as lucky charms and so forth, its impact becomes strengthened and then positive luck manifestation becomes a reality in meaningful ways.
Significant numbers are embedded in your Birth Number – as two- and three-number combinations – that can offer very positive indications of good luck. So it is important to know what these number combinations are. Here are the combinations to look out for:
- The sum of ten – These are 1 and 9, 2 and 8, 3 and 7, 4 and 6, and 5 and 5. They all add up to 10 and the sum of ten reduces itself to the master winning number 1, which is itself the number of success. HOW TO USE NUMBERS TO ENHANCE YOUR LUCK
Example 1
Say you are trying to harness the luck from the power of Sum-of-ten. The way to use the sum-of-ten combination is to look at your lucky number. You can designate your lucky number by whichever method you wish – it can be your Birth Number (Life Path Number), your Name number (Expression Number), your Kua Number, or your Taoist lucky number from your day of birth number.
Once you know your lucky number then the number that creates a sum-of-ten combination with your lucky number brings completion luck for you, giving you the ability to bring all of your projects to fruition.
The sum-of-ten can also be a wealth-enhancing number. For instance, if 8 is your lucky number then creating the presence of 2 and 8 will be excellent, either as a house number, as a car number or simply wearing the numbers 2 and 8. Needless to say, the combination of the 2 and 8 is excellent during this period as these are the numbers that indicate the direct and indirect spirits of the current Period of 8. However, other sums of ten are also good although not as good as 2+8 and 1+9 (signifies present and future prosperity respectively).
The Parent String Specials and White Stars Combination work the same way but here all three numbers must somehow be present so they can be seen as digits rather than numbers per se. The parent string combination overcomes many of the afflictions of feng shui.
Example 2:
The date of birth May 11, 1952 reduces to:
Month: 5
Day: 11
Year: 1952 = 1+9+5+2 = 17 = 1+7 = 8
Add them up to become: 5+11+8 = 24 = 2+4 = 6 (Birth Number)
The Day Number is 11, which itself is a very special number (see above Master Number). This particular date of birth also indicates an embedded trinity of combination of number that signifies extreme good fortune. This trinity of numbers are the day, month, and year respectively that signify the date of birth, with each reduced to a single digit. Together the number 2,5,8 create the trinity of earth numbers, which blend amazingly well with the Birth Number 6. This is because the number 6 is a heaven number and with heaven and earth present in your birth date number, there is created within your life the all-powerful trinity of tien ti ren – or earth, heaven and mankind.
If you are this person, to enhance or harness the luck from your birthdate even more, you can use more regularly the number 2,5,8 (together) plus 6 in your phone number, car plate, wear these numbers as accessories, and so forth.
Example 3:
The date of birth 12 January, 1975 reduces to:
Month: 1
Day: 12 = 1+2 = 3
Year: 1975 = 1+9+7+5 = 22
Add them up to become: 1+3+22 = 26 = 2+6 = 8 (Birth Number)
Note also that the Day Number is 12, which is reduced to a 3. The 3 has a powerful connection to the Birth Number of 8, as the 3 and 8 combines to become a Hotu combination of 3/8, which brings some powerful luck.

OTHER NUMBERS THAT YOU CAN FIND USING NUMEROLOGY
1) HOW TO FIND YOUR HEART’S DESIRE NUMBER
The vowels in your name are used to calculate your Heart’s Desire number (also known as your Soul's Urge or Motivation Number). Therefore, identifying your vowels can help to discover your higher purpose or motivation. To calculate your Heart’s Desire number, add the value of the vowels in your full name at birth, referring back to the Expression number chart. So, Norman Charles Potter would use O, A, A, E, O, E, with each part of the name being calculated separately:
Norman => O+A = 6+1= 7
Charles => A+E = 1+5 = 6
Potter => O+E = 6+5 = 11 = 1+1 = 2 (note that other than Birth and Name Numbers, you have to reduce the Number 11 further for calculating your other number such as your Heart’s Desire number)
Then, add these result numbers together: 7+6+2 = 15 = 1+5 = 6. Your Heart’s Desire number is 6.
2) HOW TO FIND YOUR PERSONALITY NUMBER
The Personality number reveals your interaction with the world. It shows the parts of yourself that you show to others, and how to use this to influence your exterior behavior. It shows how others perceive you and what personality traits people notice about you.
To determine this number, you only focus on the consonants in your name. In the name Norman Charles Potter, we see N, R, M, N, C, H, R, L, S, P, T, T and R.
Side Note: For Personality numbers, Y’s are counted as a consonant in numerology if the Y is next to a vowel, to produce the same sound.
Examples of Personality numbers for Norman Charles Potter:
First name (Norman) => N+R+M+N = 5+9+4+5 = 23 = 2+3 = 5
Middle name (Charles) => C+H+R+L+S = 3+8+9+3+1 = 24 = 2+4 = 6
Last name (Potter) => P+T+T+R = 7+2+2+9 = 20 = 2+0 = 2
Now, add the main result numbers together: 5+6+2 = 13 = 1+3 = 4. Your Personality number is 4.
3) HOW TO FIND YOUR BIRTHDAY NUMBER (TAOIST LUCKY NUMBER)
Your Birthday number is considered to be the least influential of your other numbers in numerology, but it is still part of your numerology overlook. It reveals any special gifts or talents that could help you along life’s path. In some New Age philosophies, it’s believed that we choose when to be born, thus making our Birthday number significant in finding out what gift we bring forward.
No calculations are required for this – no need to reduce. Examples: if you were born on the 9th day, the 14th, or the 28th, your numbers would be 9, 14, or 28.
