The four faced Buddha is Lord Brahma, one of the three most revered Gods in Hindu religion that forms the Trimurti (the other two being Lord Vishnu (God of maintenance) and Lord Shiva (God of Destruction)). He is said to be born from a lotus springing from the Vishnu's (Hindu's supreme God) navel.
Lord Brahma has four faces and eight arms and hence the name four faced Buddha. He symbolizes the source of all knowledge in the creation of the universe and all of beings. He holds a sacrificial tool, a wheel of life and the prayer book of the Vedas, among other things. He bestows grace, grants wishes and offers protection to all his devotees.
